How to Choose the Best Motorcycle Headlight

Shopping for your next LED headlight upgrade? Sorting through information and lighting specifications can be overwhelming, at best. What do these measurements mean? How useful are they? What product data is most relevant to me? As a leading aftermarket lighting manufacturer, we’ve done the homework for you. It’s important to consider several factors when choosing the best motorcycle headlight. All to ensure you get a product that enhances your visibility, safety, and riding experience.

LIGHT OUTPUT

Lumens is the most common measurement of light output for LED motorcycle headlights. But not all lumens are equal. Raw lumens provide a basic measure of light output. They don’t account for how effectively that light is directed or utilized. High raw lumen counts can be misleading, too. If the light isn’t well-focused or if it disperses in a way that doesn’t enhance visibility.

Effective lumens refer to the amount of light that is usable or effective for its intended purpose. This metric considers the factors like beam focus, light spread, and how the light is directed onto the road. This is crucial for applications like motorcycle headlights. Where effective illumination is essential for safety and visibility.

When you have lumens data, question if the measurements are effective or raw lumens. This will ensure an accurate comparison between product offerings. Custom Dynamics offers both raw and effective lumens for all motorcycle LED headlights.

BEAM PATTERN

Street legal headlights with on-road compliance have distinct low and high beam light patterns. Low beam provides a wide, short-range light. It is ideal for city riding and when approaching other vehicles. It illuminates the road in front of you without blinding oncoming traffic. High beam should have a longer and more focused light, extending further down the road. It’s suitable for open roads and highways where you need most visibility.

The best motorcycle headlight beam pattern should offer a well-balanced distribution:

Width: Ensure the beam covers a broad area to the sides of the road. This improves your ability to see obstacles, especially on curvy or narrow roads.

Distance: The beam should reach enough distance in front of you without causing a glare to oncoming traffic.

Cutoff: A well-defined beam cutoff across the top of the beam is a critical feature for motorcycle headlights. It impacts safety for both the rider and other road users.

LEFT: Low beam pattern of a high-lumen 6 LED auxiliary light pod; only 2 LEDs illuminate when on low beam. The light pattern is spread in all directions with no defined cutoff. RIGHT: Low beam pattern of Custom Dynamics® Shark Demon® 2 LED Headlight has a defined cutoff and intentional beam pattern that stretches 66ft to either side. You can clearly see the difference in how the wood line is illuminated.

BEAM CUTOFF

Headlight beam cutoff is arguably the most crucial element in LED headlight design. With a proper cutoff, the headlight can illuminate the road without causing excessive light scatter and upward spread. This improves the rider’s ability to detect potential hazards well before reaching them. It also contributes to safer night riding by reducing eye strain and improving overall road awareness.

You must consider your riding habits, too. Different riding styles will benefit from different beam patterns:

Urban Riding: Opt for a widespread pattern with short range to light up close obstacles and signs. The low beam should have good lateral coverage.

Highway Riding: A high beam with a longer throw is crucial for spotting distant hazards. Ensure the beam has a focused pattern to maximize visibility without causing glare for others.

Harsh Weather: If you live in a region with frequent inclement weather such as dust, rain, or fog a SAE fog light can aid in visibility in addition to the headlight.

Furthermore, the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has regulations concerning headlight performance. These include the requirement for proper beam cutoff. Custom Dynamics’ in-house engineering team designs and tests products against these standards. This ensures all motorcycle headlight offerings carry DOT compliance. You can identify these by a “DOT” marking in the lens.

QUALITY & INSTALLATION

High quality materials are non-negotiable when you are comparing motorcycle LED headlights. Look for a headlight made from durable materials such as aluminum or polycarbonate. These materials ensure the headlight can withstand vibrations, impacts, and harsh weather conditions. Also, check for an IP (Ingress Protection) rating. Indicating resistance to water and dust. A rating of IP65 or higher is sufficient to handle rain and other environmental factors.

Remember quality goes beyond the LEDs and reflectors in a headlight. It also applies to the product wiring and connectors. Ensure the LED headlight is compatible with your motorcycle’s electronics and isn’t going to rattle you with added service fees to resolve BCM codes. Custom Dynamics designs most LED motorcycle headlights as direct, plug and play replacements for OEM Harley-Davidson & Indian Motorcycles. They do not need a separate connection to the battery or other modifications to install. This makes installation efficient. So, you can quickly reap the benefits of your headlight upgrade.

Custom Dynamics offers a variety of motorcycle headlights. Each with their own unique benefits and beam patterns. They range in price from under $200 for a 5.75” headlight, up to almost $1000 for a dual headlight kit for Road Glide. Hello Team Custom Dynamics,
You guys just helped me with my faulty CD dynamics equalizer. As always your service is absolutely outstanding.
    Well, question for you again:
Coincidentally, my old fashion halogen headlamp blew last night, for the second time in not that long actually, I think it happened a year ago, an actual “explosion” last year, wondering if the headlight reacts differently when it is the last non LED lamp on board…

Anyways, it’s time to upgrade to an LED light and you guys are the best as far as I can tell, from experience and reviews. I probably need to some guidance. First, for what it’s worth, I’m not made of gold and silver. I can’t buy something too expensive. Then as to my use with my 2007 Sportster 883C: I ride a lot, long commute every few days (3 hours each way), both in urban and rural settings with plenty of deer and other animal encounters. I ride cross country, I ride in big nature and I ride off pavement whenever I get a chance (my bike is customized for that). What headlight would you recommend me? I make videos for a living and regularly puts out motorcycle-themed videos on YouTube. I’ll be very glad to show off my new light part of an upcoming motorcycle safety video and in an update about customizing my bike.

    Many thanks!
    – Gerard
